WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

Our car trip went better than we could have imagined.  I can say that wholeheartedly and not feel like I am bragging, because so many other things go crazy at other times.  But, if there was ever a world where our kids would always travel this easily (not going to happen), then we would drive around the world.  But, I will gladly take how wonderful yesterday's travel was any time.

This morning, we headed to Tanganyika Wildlife Park near Wichita, and it was amazing.  We started off our visit by petting the giraffes.

There were animals and some reptiles to pet along every turn, which the girls loved!

The kangaroos and their joeys! (babies in their pouches) were a major hit.

Lily and John enjoyed riding a camel.

We enjoyed seeing so many creatures - including a two week old zebra.

We rounded out our time with the lemurs, who were adorably strange.

Bella was not up for pictures and definitely ran out of good juice at the end.

If you are in the area, you should definitely checking it out.  This post is short on words and heavy on pictures, because I am enjoying hanging with my family.  We love them so!

READY FOR OUR FIRST BIG FAMILY OF SIX TRIP

We are embarking on our first big trip as a family of six.  The plan is to hit up Kansas and Colorado, the places where our families reside.  Are we crazy?  Maybe.  But, keep in mind that the babies sleep most of the time, and the little girls love watching movies in the car.  We will have help everywhere we are going, and we enjoy being on the go.  All things considered, this looks like it should be a good trip - though we will not be sleeping through the night during it, which is always a bummer.
Packing up for everybody was quite a chore.

Here's what the table looked like in the middle of everything.

The kids were all a big help.

This morning we did manage to cram everything into the swagger wagon, which seems a vacation miracle with all of the baby gear that we are hauling around the country. Here's the back of the van- thankfully, I am married to a packer extraordinaire.

That is two double strollers, a pack n play, two baby backpacks, and various other essentials like my new favorite item- the formula mixing pitcher. Can't leave home without it. After this picture was taken, we managed to cram a bouncy seat in as well, because of course we need that.

This morning also included such drama as John leaving his wallet at Sam's. Thankfully, a kind stranger turned it in, which is such blessing and grace for us. Always undeserved grace.

And now we are on the road. It really is going well.

Girls are on their second movie, and we have heard reports from the back seat like, "William and Violet are not crying." Thanks for that excellent and obvious news, Lily. Feels good to be getting out of town!

A CASE OF THE MONDAYS TURNED AROUND

Apparently Mondays and I have not been getting along lately.  Yesterday I braved the doctor's office with all four children.  One might think that I would know better, but one would be wrong.  I really thought it would be okay, even though I forgot to bring extra technology for the girls.  Many moments of the two hour extravaganza were okay, but there were some glaring exceptions.

I arrived early on account of coming straight there from exercise class and planning to feed the babies in the waiting room.  They called us back almost immediately, so I was stuck feeding the babies in a "treatment room" that had no books or other distractions.  For a while, I thought we might be that cute family with well-mannered children, but then, while the girls were playing, things changed.

I heard a blood-curdling shriek and knew what had happened.  Bella had bit Lily, and left a rather horrendous looking mark.  Bella has fangs and has no compunction in using them.  And I was trapped.  There were nurses all around, who thankfully were very sympathetic, but I couldn't very well spank Bella right there in the middle of everything.  So I settled for a stern talk which had no effect whatsoever on the smirking Bella.  Awesome.

Once the babies had been weighed and measured - Violet is 6 lbs 11 oz and William is 8 lbs 2 oz, Praise King Jesus - we headed into the regular room, which thankfully had lots of books and distractions.  The upside of this whole visit is that I got nothing but great news about the twins.

Are they growing?  Yes - William is on the growth chart and Violet is almost there!  They are doing so well.
Can I change from the most primo liquid gold formula that we are on to one that costs slightly less but is just as good for them?  Yes!  And, here are 8 sample cans for you to take with you.  Oh, and the nurse will fill out paperwork since you have multiples so that the formula company will send another case to your house.
They still have thrush, because I am terrible at swabbing each of their mouths every 8 hours.  What should we do?  Yes, that medicine is a pain.  Let me prescribe something better that is less work and will knock it out.  You don't have time for that other stuff.
Baby boy has a tiny bit of baby acne - is there anything I should do?  Get some 1% Hydrocortisone Cream, and it should clear right up based on what I can see.
We are going to Kansas and Colorado this week - any issues that we should be aware of?  Nope - they should do great.  But really - are you taking them all?
Baby boy has a leaky eye sometimes - is that normal?  Yes - just massage the tear duct with clean hands, and that will help clear it, and he will grow out of it.

Seriously, it was amazing.  Good news on every front, and we continue to praise the Lord for the undeserved grace that we receive through William and Violet.  Here's what it looked like to have all the kids hanging out waiting for the doctor.

Even with all the good news, there was still some bad that followed.  We headed to the pharmacy that is in the same building, but you have to go outside and up a hill to get to it.  I decided that would be quicker than heading to a whole different place, and the weather was nice.

We got into the pharmacy, and everyone in there, and I do mean everyone, made a fuss over us.  They were all incredibly kind, but it can be a bit overwhelming to answer all the questions while trying to make sure the Lily and Bella do not wreck any havoc and comforting William who was still upset about his Hep B shot.  After what felt like an eternity, but what was in reality about 10 minutes, our prescription of much better thrush medicine was ready.

As I was paying, I didn't realize that Bella was trying to shut the heavy front door and was close to slamming her fingers in it.  The staff all noticed, since we were the starring act of the moment, and they were yelling and running toward her to make sure her fingers didn't get smashed.  This alarmed Bella so much, that she began wailing and insisting on being carried.  And, if Bella wants to be carried, there is no reasoning with her, and she will. not. walk.  She will lay on the floor instead.

So, I headed out the door, with Bella clinging to my back, pushing the double stroller around the whole building to get back to the car.  That was a low point.  I'm sure anyone who saw me thought I was out of my mind or that I would be soon, if I wasn't already.

The afternoon held such joys a playing referee during "nap time" and forgetting to go to Lily's gymnastics class.  All in all, not a great day.

But, then dinner arrived brought by a friend, and talking helped.  And another friend dropped something else off, so there was more chatting.  Amazing how chatting with friends helps make light of the hard things.

Last night brought the usual of sitting near sleeping babies who like to hold hands and cuddle one another - that will melt your heart.

It brought mixing formula and making bottles, but this time, I started mixing in the new, slightly less expensive formula.  Hooray!

Untitled

It brought listening to Lily and Bella talk and laugh and play after bedtime and a discussion between John and I about needing to be more intentional and helping set better bedtime ground rules so that instead of tired, cranky girls, we have well-rested, sweet girls.  They can be so sweet.

This morning is what really turned the case of the Mondays around.  First of all - it is Tuesday.  That is always a step in the right direction.  Secondly, I woke up at 8 a.m. to John telling me that the babies were fed with their diapers changed, and that Lily and Bella were just getting up.  Bella got into bed and gave me lots of good morning kisses, and Lily told me about how she had slept soooo long.  Then, the babysitter arrived, and I left the kiddos in great hands doing fun things like sidewalk chalk and bubbles while I headed off for a hair trim and some shopping.  I even managed to get some coordinating twin clothes for our trip.  Score.

I said it last Friday in the Reality Check post, but in reality, things are very, very good here.  So good that I feel I should pinch myself to make sure it is all real.  God's overwhelming faithfulness and goodness in the face of things that could have gone very differently is amazing.  And, I am glad that I had a morning away - it sure helped banish that terrible Monday afterglow.

WEEKEND: RAIN + FUN

Sometimes I really fail to come up with a catchy title for a blog post, and the title for this post definitely reflects that.  So, that's that.

But, it does sum up this weekend pretty accurately.  On Friday night, John worked late finishing up the month end reports at CFA, and the kids and I ate dinner there.  That meant that we got to bed a bit on the late side.  As we were going to bed, John and I were trying to decide whether or not we should go to a run at the Zoo the following morning.  When everything was said and done, we decided to go for it.  We are sort of addicted to being active is what we have determined.  It's like a compulsion.

So, Saturday morning dawned early, and we hustled to get up and moving and everyone and everything loaded into the swagger wagon.  It turned out to be a strange morning on several fronts.

1.  We got there 45 minutes early, because there was confusion about what time it started.
2.  It was called the Cheetah Chase, so many people were dressed in cheetah or leopard apparel.
3.  We got a call from our restaurant that a large order of food had been canceled, but the food had already been made.  So, we ended up feeding Chick n' Minis to the crowd to everyone's delight.
4.  It was raining off and on before the race began.

5.  The Central High School football team got the crowd ready to go with dance numbers.

Untitled

6.  I did a 1K walk through the Zoo before it was open, with the twins, who slept through the whole thing.  That explains why I was dressed so athletically.
7.  The girls really wanted to see some animals, and the 5K went around the Zoo, but not through it.  So, immediately after the run, John and I cruised through to see the animals closest to the entrance, because a downpour was imminent.

8.  I got the twins loaded into the car right before the sky opened up.  The girls got fairly wet, but a donut run on the way home cured it all.

Like I said, it was a strange experience.  We spent the rest of Saturday at home doing random projects and lounging.  It was a nice change of pace.  The sky on Saturday night after all the rain turned out to be really beautiful down our street.

Sunday night we had a babysitter come so John and I could escape the circus and enjoy being together. Over dinner we marveled at the work God has done in our family in the last 10 weeks, and I sat in tears at Outback as we thanked the Lord for his overwhelming goodness to us.  Then we went and saw a movie.  We got the very best parking spot in the whole lot, which felt like another sweet gift from the Lord - not that we needed it, but it was nice.

We saw Now You See Me, which I highly recommend as a fun, light summer movie.  It was nice to shut off my brain and relax in the exciting world of illusion and mystery.  And, now we are headed into a short week here before we head off on a trip.  I am beyond excited.
