ELEVEN YEARS DEEP: OUR ANNIVERSARY

Eleven years ago today dawned beautiful, warm and clear.  John and I woke up in different houses full of anticipation for our wedding day.  With our friends and family surrounding us, we prepared for our wedding and took pictures and walked down the aisle and committed to God and our witnesses to love and cherish one another for as long as we both shall live.

Today we could hear the trickle of rain as we laid in bed thinking how we wanted to stay in bed forever.  Instead, we loaded up the minivan with our children and John's best friend from college/best man to meet up with our church for a city-wide service project.  After that, we hit up a soccer game to cheer and laugh with friends whose children were also playing.  I'm not sure what the rest of the day will hold yet, but I'm sure it will hold seven of us together.  (It is really fun to have one half of our besties in town, though we miss Steph!)  Tonight will hold a lot of romance, to be sure.  Happy eleven years to us.

Truthfully though, it is a happy eleven years.  Our marriage has been a picture of God's grace in and through both of us, and when we wished each other "Happy Anniversary" this morning, we meant it.  I am so grateful.  We've had good and bad, better and worse, and I wouldn't change a thing, because God keeps working on us both.

Though today is not filled with great life change and romance, it is filled with the richness of our regular life.  If on our wedding day, you had sat down with that bright-eyed, in-love, naive bride and groom and told them what the next years would hold, I don't think they would have believed you.  We just never would have dreamed up our life.

But so many dreams have come true, and even as other dreams have died, we've been given new dreams and gifts along the way.  Things that ring truer for what God has made us for and that shape us more for his purposes than for our own.  My heart sings with gratitude when I look at what God has done.  I would marry John all over again today if given the change.  Happy Anniversary, John.  You are God's best for me, and I am so thankful.  XOXO
