4TH OF JULY FUN

After our whirlwind trip to Dallas, we were looking forward to spending the holiday with our children.  Upon our arrival in Little Rock, we hopped back into the car to go fireworks shopping, and we found an indoor, air-conditioned place, so πŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ.  Also, because we all dressed so patriotically, they gave us $15 worth of free fireworks - double bonus!

John worked some of the 4th, but we also snuck in a family donut date in the middle of the morning.

We had some friends over, and I had fun making lots of patriotic food with a little help from my little friends.

I also served yummy Aloha Sliders and hot dogs wrapped in crescent rolls for the kids.  After dinner, we did a few fireworks at our house before heading to the big show.

We have never done a big fireworks show with our children, but this year, we decided to brave it.  Our friends graciously invited us to the country club, so it was a smaller crowd, and that definitely suited us.

It was a beautiful display, and 3 out of 4 children really enjoyed it.  Bella got nervous, so John took her back a ways to calm her down.  There are always highs and lows at this stage.  But, mostly, it was a win!  Plus, we had extra laps for our littles - thanks, Henrys/Wingfields!

All in all, it was a great holiday with friends and family and food and fun and gratefulness that we live in a country that values these things! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

QUICK DALLAS TRIP

We had the extreme privilege of attending a wedding this weekend.  Weddings really are so beautiful and such a covenant between two people and the Lord.  I'm always so thankful to be invited and glad if I get to attend.  Saturday night brought together a dear friend from college and his stunning bride.  Somehow, I failed to get a picture of them both, but it really was a completely gorgeous affair.  Plus, I love having an excuse to dress up.

John went down on Friday and helped run some last minute errands and participated in the rehearsal dinner and bachelor party.  They went Go-Karting.  Like extreme go-karting.  John ended up extremely bruised on his hips.  I'll spare you those pictures, but I've never seen bruises so bad.  I flew in on Saturday morning.  We used miles, and I ended up in first class.  Score.

We opted for TJ's Seafood Market for a quick brunch.  Honey Butter Lobster Fritters and Truffle Fries proved to be a delicious, if heavy, choice.

Honestly, we've been to Dallas a ton, and at this particular stage, we didn't feel like doing much shopping and we had already eaten plenty, so we slept.  We went back to our hotel room and napped the afternoon away which felt like perfection in our life that doesn't allow for much of this behavior.

We got dolled up and headed to the wedding, which included some of the most truthful wedding vows I've ever heard.  They both promised the litany of ways that they would be faithful and honoring of one another, but they also both said, "And when I fail to do those things, I will confess and apologize and seek to restore our relationship."  What an eyes-wide-open approach to what marriage takes.  My eyes filled with tears throughout their ceremony, because seeing what God does with two people who are following him and seeking him is truly a gift to behold.  I look forward to see what all God has in store for Luke and Chelsea-Shay!

John and I also got to spend time with other dear friends from our JBU days - we treasure the friendships we made there in so many ways.

Sunday morning brought us to another chance at brunch, and we picked an old favorite from a past trip to Dallas.  I used it as an opportunity to wear sequin shorts, because unfortunately, not as many opportunities to wear sparkly shorts come as I might wish.

Henry's Majestic has a "Sparkle Bar," which made me feel right at home.  After a delicious hour, we headed home to rejoin our children for the rest of the holiday weekend.

It was a great, albeit quick, trip.  Congrats, Luke and Chelsea-Shay!  Thanks for giving us an excuse to get away and reconnect - it helps keep our marriage alive and well.

SUMMER READING FUN WITH KIDS

We're in the heart of summer time with July freshly arrived.  Our days have been spent at the pool and lake and various other fun summer pursuits - just this week I've introduced both Parent Trap movies (1961 and 1998 versions), Swiss Family Robinson and Homeward Bound, all of which were hits at my house.  We've also been doing a lot of reading.  I always read a lot for myself, but with the extra time this summer, I turned my attention to my kiddos and teaching them to love books.

Untitled
(Aren't these beautiful?  Modern Mrs. Darcy always inspires me with her beautiful books on Instagram, and I asked for some for my birthday.  Love them - thanks, Mom!)

We have always been a library family, especially in the summer time.  (You can take a walk down our memory lane and see this library post from 2012 with tiny Lily who I thought was so big and tiny Bella with her precious chubby baby hands and feet.)  However, very often, we go in and I let the children wildly and randomly grab books.  This means that we get a selection of often odd or at the very least, seasonally inappropriate books.  And, I'm going to be honest here - some kid's books are just not good.  At all.  With weird messages.  Then I am left wondering how in the world that particular book got published and ever landed in my home, but I digress.

I would NEVER randomly pick out books for myself to read.  Never.  In fact, I research rather extensively before I pick up a book, because there are simply too many good books out there to spend time reading ones that I will not enjoy or learn from.  Recently I realized that I should apply this a bit more to what my children read - obviously what Lily reads falls more into this category, because she is actually a reader.  But I also wanted to up our reading game with picture books that I read aloud to all of them.

I use the library app (Overdrive) on my phone extensively to hold and read or listen to digital titles myself.  Only recently did I start using it to look up and hold physical books for the kids.  This is such a MAJOR WIN.  I'm sure many more savvy mothers than me have been doing this forever - I know at least one of my friends has mentioned it before, but it is seriously amazing.  I type in books we want to read, and there they await me on a shelf with my name on them.  The girls actually think this is pretty magical, and I can't help but agree.

In order to find great recommendations, I scoured a trusted site (Modern Mrs. Darcy), and I began following Kidsbookstagram and Happily.ever.elephants on Instagram for regular reading inspiration for my littles.  Whenever I see one I want to get, I add it to my Goodreads shelf of Books I Want to Read with Littles.  (I also use Goodreads to track my own reading and To Be Read lists.)  Every so often, I add a bunch to our library hold list, and we go pick up books that I actually want to read to my kids.  Like magic.

My favorite new discoveries have been The Bear and the Piano, which had me shedding tears (I cry easily) and The Day the Crayons Quit, along with the Olivia series.  And, as a throwback to the late 80s and early 90s, I have also checked out several Where's Waldo books, and they have had a high entertainment value in our home.  Waldo is just so sneaky.

As far as books to read aloud to the big girls, I have an entirely different list.  We've been listening to the first Harry Potter book many afternoons this summer, and Lily is loving it.  We won't go further in the series until she's a little older, but I am really enjoying seeing her like something that I adore.  Last summer we read Mr. Popper's Penguins, Charlotte's Web and My Father's Dragon (and it's two sequels) - all of which were great.  There are far too many books and too little time, and when I started curating a list of books for us to read together or for them to read once they really can, I realized how much of my own childhood I spent reading and how many books I love.

Hopefully, this gives you some new ammunition and sources of recommendations for fun kid's books.  Maybe it will prevent you from reading back to back Halloween books like I did this week (I still let the kids pick out a few books, and wouldn't you know it?  We had several Halloween titles. Perfect for the 4th of July week.)  We are loving our summer reading this year (trick-or-treating dinosaur not-with-standing) and hope you will too!

RECIPES WE'VE ENJOYED

As I wrote last month, we've been making better choices eating as a family.  I thought I'd share a few of the recipes that we have enjoyed recently.  I've become rather obsessed with both sweet potatoes and avocados, and this combination is a favorite.

Untitled

Who knew I'd become this person?  Certainly not me.  I got the idea from this recipe of Sweet Potato Toast that can be adapted a couple of different ways.  I microwave my sweet potatoes when I'm in a hurry.  Or just really hungry.

I made this Shrimp and Mashed Cauliflower recipe that actually reminded me of Shrimp and Grits - especially when we covered it in barbecue sauce.  I threw the cauliflower in the food processor instead of mashing it and used greek yogurt in it, which definitely made it taste more like grits than mashed potatoes - we'll definitely do this again.

Untitled

I didn't take pictures of anything else, but here's a quick rundown of other meals that we really enjoyed!

Chicken, Spinach, Mushroom and Feta Stuffed Sweet Potatoes

Grilled Pineapple Teriyaki Pork Chops

Mini Meatloaf Pepper Rings

Garlic Chicken Zucchini and Corn

Japanese Farm Style Teriyaki Bowl

We are also savoring lots of summer fruits - aren't watermelons pretty?

Hope this gives you some new meal ideas - happy eating!
